I was staying at the Kookaburra Holiday Park, surrounded by fellow travellers from around the world, each pursuing their unique Australian experiences.

A Unique Day at the Barramundi Farm

One sunny Saturday morning, my adventure took an unexpected twist. The hostel owner, with infectious enthusiasm, woke everyone up at 8 AM to offer a day of work at a Barramundi fish farm. Barramundi, a commonly found fish in Australia, would become the focus of my day. With half-dazed curiosity, I embraced this sudden opportunity.

The Farm Experience Unveiled

Clad in long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, and insect repellent, I eagerly waited for my ride to the farm. A friendly Chinese man arrived promptly at 8:30 AM, ready to lead me to his Barramundi haven. As we reached the farm, he explained my tasks for the day. Oddly, the fish were dying, and our mission was to remove the deceased ones from the lake to save the others.

A Unique Task and Unexpected Challenges

Armed with a net-like tool and a mallet, my task was simple yet physically demanding. I had to scoop up the lifeless Barramundi and place them in a Bobcat, which he would later use to dispose of them. This repetitive work proved tiring, especially as each net could hold up to 20 fish. Lunchtime: An Unconventional Meal

Lunchtime arrived, and the farm owner prepared a sandwich with ham and cheese from a barrel. While not the most sanitary sight—ants roamed the barrel—I pushed aside any reservations and savoured the meal. It was a lesson in humility, adapting to unfamiliar situations that often characterize life on a farm.

During our lunchtime chat, the owner shared his journey from being a taxi driver in Sydney to becoming a fish farmer. He had transitioned to this life, purchasing the farm without prior experience. While discussing the fish's deaths, I suggested the lake may have been overpopulated. However, he dismissed my hypothesis, indicating that he needed to complete the day's work quickly.

As the sun began to set, around 6 PM, I concluded my laborious day. We toured the water basins, securing gates and irrigation systems, before he drove me back to the hostel. He compensated me at a rate of $20 per hour, subtracting the lunch break, since he had provided the meal. Exhausted but content, I reflected on my accomplishment—I had collected approximately 20,000 deceased Barramundi.

While this day of labour left me physically drained, it left an indelible mark on my journey.
