Growing up in Italy, a country known for its delectable Mediterranean cuisine, I've always had a passion for good food. As a curious traveller, I've embarked on adventures that took me to four continents, and along the way, I've had the pleasure of sampling various culinary delights. Let me share with you my top 10 favourite dishes that left a lasting impression on my taste buds:

1- Authentic Neapolitan Pizza - Naples, Italy

Oh, the pride of Naples - authentic Neapolitan pizza! The figure of the Pizzaiolo has even been recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage. I must admit, I'm an avid pizza lover and have tried various styles, but nothing compares to the traditional Neapolitan pizza. The fluffy crust, flavourful tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and a sprinkle of basil create a harmony of flavours that transport you straight to the cobblestone streets of Naples. While some might argue over which pizzeria serves the best, I believe that wherever you find a Pizzaiolo who respects the Verace version, you're in for a treat.

Pho - Vietnam

The moment I had my first spoonful of Pho Bo, a Vietnamese beef noodle soup, I knew I was in for a memorable culinary journey. This comforting bowl of goodness, with its fragrant broth, tender beef slices, rice noodles, and a garnish of fresh herbs and sprouts, is a symphony of flavours. While visiting Hanoi, I discovered the true essence of Pho in humble street stalls where locals and tourists alike gather to savour this iconic dish.

Beef Udon - Japan

Japan's culinary scene is a delightful mix of delicate flavours and exquisite presentations. While I'm not the biggest sushi fan, I fell in love with Beef Udon during my culinary exploration. The thick udon noodles, known for their chewy texture, soak up the rich and savoury broth, creating a harmonious balance. Tender, thinly sliced beef and a medley of fresh vegetables complete this heart-warming dish. Whether you try the traditional hot version or the equally delightful Stir-Fry or Mongolian styles, you won't be disappointed.

Poutine - Canada

I have a soft spot for simple yet soul-soothing dishes, and Canadian Poutine fits the bill perfectly. Who would have thought that the quintessential Canadian dish would be a marriage of fries, cheese curds, and savoury gravy? It's a satisfying indulgence that has stolen the hearts of many. While its exact origin remains a subject of debate, one thing is certain: every bite takes you on a comforting journey to the heart of Canada.

Erwtensoep - Netherlands

The Dutch have mastered the art of creating hearty and satisfying dishes, and Erwtensoep, or split pea soup, is no exception. During my time in the Netherlands, I relished this dense and flavourful soup, especially during the Christmas and New Year periods when it's a cherished winter delicacy. With its generous chunks of sausage and an abundance of split peas, it's a nourishing dish that warms both body and soul.

Fish & Chips - England

Fish & Chips, a quintessential English dish, has become a global culinary sensation, and for good reason. Succulent fish coated in crispy batter, served alongside piping hot chips and a side of mushy peas or puréed peas, makes for a delightful meal. Though traditionally associated with England, this beloved dish has travelled far and wide, and you can now find it in various corners of the world, thanks to the English communities that have shared their culinary heritage.

Aussie Burger - Australia

When in Australia, I couldn't resist trying the quintessential Aussie Burger. A burger with a “subtropical” twist, it takes the classic concept to a whole new level. While the usual suspects of tomato, lettuce, onions, and a juicy patty form the foundation, an Aussie burger adds a unique touch with pineapple, pickled beetroots, and a fried egg. This delightful combo adds a burst of flavours and textures, making it an ideal treat after a day of surfing, relaxing on the beach, or hiking in Queensland's picturesque mountains.

Sweet and Sour Chicken - China

Chinese cuisine is a treasure trove of diverse and flavoursome dishes, and one that I particularly enjoy is Sweet and Sour Chicken. This popular take-out favourite has a delightful balance of sweet and tangy flavours, with crispy chicken pieces coated in a delicious sweet and sour sauce. While some versions incorporate pineapple, as an Italian, I prefer mine without it, savouring the deliciously saucy chicken on its own. It's a comfort food that holds a special place in my heart.

Korma - India

Indian cuisine is a medley of aromatic spices and rich flavours that excite the senses. During my time living in the Netherlands, I was fortunate to share my home with friends from different parts of India. Thanks to them, I had the pleasure of trying various Indian dishes, and Korma is one that truly stood out. A delectable blend of braised meat or chicken, vegetables, yoghurt, and cream, Korma offers a creamy and luscious sauce that's perfect for soaking up with naan or rice. Every spoonful was a heavenly experience.

Churrasco - Brazil

As a lover of barbecue, Churrasco had been on my must-try list for quite some time. Although I've yet to visit Brazil, I had the pleasure of experiencing Churrascaria in various countries like England, Australia, and the Netherlands. Brazilian barbecue is a carnivore's dream come true, where succulent cuts of beef, veal, lamb, pork, and chicken are skewered and grilled over a wood fire. The result is tender, juicy, and bursting with flavour. Authentic Churrasco features Brazilian cuts like Picanha, making it an unforgettable feast. The experience is often complemented by a generous buffet of appetizers, salads, and sides, culminating in roasted cinnamon pineapple for a delightful finish. Exploring the world through its diverse and delicious cuisines has been a journey of joy and discovery. Each dish carries a story of its origin, culture, and the people who lovingly prepare it. So, wherever your travels take you, be sure to savour the flavours and relish the memories.
